 | | Alternating colors with Marmoleum tile give an amazing range of design options | Marmoleum comes in two grades. One is 2.5 mm thick and the contractor grade is 2 mm thick. The 2mm grade comes in 12 inch squares or sheet goods, just like the 2.5. The difference in thickness isn't really even noticeable when you hold the two up next to eachother. That's because the 2.0 has a slightly thicker backing. The sheet version of the 2mm is called Marmoleum Composition Sheet, and the tile is Marmoleum Composition Tile. The 'composition' comes from that extra little backing, but the make up of the Marmoleum itself is identical.
They both have similar warranties and I wouldn't hesitate to use the 2.0 in any situation except for perhaps the highest traffic commercial applications. Even then, many builders will use the 2.0 because of the great cost savings in a large space.
Perhaps the biggest difference is that there are a limited number of colors available in 2.0. As of right now there are a dozen color options in the composition 2.0, far less than the seemingly unlimited selection of the various 2.5 styles. However the colors that are available have a nice range and we've rarely had trouble finding one a customer likes if they chose to go with the composition 2.0.
The other big difference is price. The composition Marmoleum is about a third less than the 2.5. So if you're thinking of going with Marmoleum in a kitchen or bath remodel and you're on a budget, see if you like any of the colors available, and don't think twice about the that .5 mm difference. Install it with confidence.
