On the Meaning of 'Value' and Advice for Hiring a Contractor
When deciding on a contractor to work on your home or business, it is important to choose carefully. 'Value' isn't just about price. You want the work to be done properly by trained professionals using quality materials. Only then can you be assured that the project will hold up to the test of time.Unfortunately many contractors have sprung up recently using unskilled labor and shoddy materials. At best you may pay for work that you wind up being unhappy with. At worst you might pay for work that is never even completed. |
Here are Some Things to Look for:
- Make sure the contractor has a CCB license that is currently valid. You can check that here. Also on the Oregon CCB you can check if they have ever had disciplinary action taken on them. (Our CCB# is 52699)
- Don't be afraid to ask for references. A good contractor will be glad for the chance to provide them.
- Get a detailed bid for the work you want completed in writing before any work is started or any money is paid.
- Beware of contractors who ask for the entire amount of the job paid up front.
- Find out how long the contractor has been in business. The longer a contractor has been in business, the more likely they are stable and performing well for their customers.
- Visit the physical location of the contractor. A reliable, established contractor should have a business address.
